Superbill:

How insurance works and how you can use it

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Understanding health insurance coverage can be confusing. The terms that I want to focus on are In-Network, Out-of-Network and Superbill. Most people think they have to go to a doctor that accepts their insurance, but this is not true. I want to explain what this means from the doctor’s standpoint as well as from the patient’s standpoint.
An In-Network doctor is a doctor that has signed a contract with a health insurance company. Under this contract the doctor has agreed to a fee schedule given to them by the insurance company. This fee schedule is a list of the different services that the health insurance will reimburse the doctor for.

So what does this mean for you?

The insurance company dictates how much the doctor can charge for their services, what services the doctor can charge for, the amount of services the doctor can charge for and how many visits the doctor can see that patient. This impacts the treatment that you receive and quality of care the doctor can provide.
The Out-of-Network doctor is a doctor that has not entered into a contract with health insurance companies. They are free to treat their patients as they see fit with the patient’s best interests in mind.

Out-of-Network Insurance pays YOU better

When it comes to an In-Network doctor, the insurance company is quick it put up a lot of barriers and drag their feet when it come to reimbursing the doctor. The reason being is the doctor is taking money away from the insurance company. YOU as the patient on the other hand, typically get reimbursed more easily. The insurance company is much more likely to please you as a client and therefore provide you with a reimbursement to keep you as a client.

How does a Superbill help?

A superbill is an itemized bill in which the services have already been paid for. This itemized bill has a list of the services provided by the doctor along with the medical codes associated with each service. This Superbill is what you submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
